As the daughter of two children’s book illustrators and authors, Carrie Rutherford inherited a strong artistic streak and a love for storytelling. As a child, she lived near the Appalachian Mountains in northern New Jersey where an abundance of natural materials inspired her early sculptures.
Carrie began Dragon Folk Studios in 1990 as a single mother of 3 young children. Her deep love for the forest, her vivid imagination and storytelling abilities all come together in the creation of her magical forest creatures.
Using clay, crystals, wood, paper and other materials, she sculpts and carves candle holders, incense burners and business card holders in the Dragon Folk motif of other worldly dragons, wizards, unicorns, mermaids and fairies.
In addition to her sculptural work, Carrie wrote and illustrated “Legends of Dragonfolk” to enlighten and inform newcomers to the enchanted worlds where her creatures abide. She also makes pet and human portrait sculptures as requested.
