Known for his unique take on the art of copper repoussé, Mark Oberkirsch is well-revered among the tooled copper community. This Missouri-based artist has a background in metalworking and sculpture, but quickly fell in love with copper work thanks to the material’s unmatched malleability and distinctive color. Oberkirsch’s collection of beautiful handmade copper art is testament to the artist’s commitment to experimenting with the medium while showcasing his love of texture and color.
Inspired by the Arts and Crafts Movement, Oberkirsch Designs uses copper repoussé (or copper chasing) to groove and channel the copper to create unique, multidimensional designs. Oberkirsch implements a stylus to hand-draw the designs onto the back of a copper sheet, which he then paints on the front side. A final lacquering process renders his pieces ready for matting and hanging. Sugarloaf Craft Festivals is proud to host Oberkirsch Designs as part of our several annual juried arts and crafts shows.
