Melanie Moore makes eye-catching hair ornaments - French combs, hair sticks and snoods. A snood is a fabric netting which is wrapped around the hair. Her ornaments are made with nickel silver, brass, sterling silver and wood with vintage beads and lace accents.
She often saw women wearing similar elegant hair accessories in Europe but couldn’t find anything comparable in the U.S. Once she started making and wearing her designs, she received many compliments and questions about where to purchase them. She began distributing to Madison Avenue boutiques and then bigger names like Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorfs and Neiman Marcus jumped on boards.
The retailers pressured her to make the accessories more cheaply. So she decided to sell directly to her customers rather than cheapen the product. At shows, Melanie has the opportunity to show her customers how to use her combs and sticks in person.
