Travis and Joyce Miller began wildcrafting the fruits of rural Virginia to supplement their retirement income. Travis started by creating his own salt seasonings, sassafras tea, butter and other homemade concoctions.
Soon, they discovered the amazing medicinal properties of hickory bark which contains high levels of magnesium and was used by Native Americans to heal headaches, arthritis, inflammation and cramping.
The Millers produce 5 flavors of Hickory Syrup: Whiskey Barrel-aged, Brandy-infused, Vanilla Bean, Brandy/Vanilla and their Original Hickory Syrup. Most commonly used on pancakes and French Toast, people also use it on salmon, sweet potatoes, squash and apple dishes or in cocktails or soda.
Whenever possible, the Millers use hickory bark harvested from the naturally shedding Shagbark Hickory tree in the forests surrounding their home in Clarke County, VA.
In addition to Hickory Syrup, Falling Bark Farm sells half a dozen locally sourced raw honeys, Brazilian coffee and vanilla extract.
The Millers have appeared in Garden and Gun Magazine and on CNN, NPR, RFD-TV.
