For years, career fireman and EMT Kevin Carney made cake donuts for the annual fundraiser at his local firehouse. The donuts, made from a secret family recipe, were such a crowd pleaser that Carney realized he should start selling them through retail outlets. He teamed up with his brother and opened Firehouse Donuts which distributes the donuts to two dozen select outlets in the Philadelphia area. The donuts come in four flavors: plain, powdered sugar, cinnamon and chocolate frosting.
Carney comes from a family of skilled cooks. His mother trained at Cordon Bleu in Paris before starting her own catering business. And his grandmother was recruited by the Irish government to write a cookbook to help people cook satisfying meals with limited food rations. His brother is still involved in the business although Kevin says he wouldn’t dare ask him to make the donuts. Try you favorite flavors at the next Sugarloaf Crafts Festival!
